As we monitor how Google ranks our sites among the competition or read up on the latest changes the search engines have rolled out in "scoring" pages, one thing to keep in mind: we're writing for people. It's easy to get caught up in all the details of how major engines crawl our pages and tactics for trying to move our site to the top of page ranks. But even Google points out in its Webmaster Guidelines, "Make pages primarily for users, not for search engines." Quality and relevancy are two essentials here. As you develop copy, tweak pages or even contemplate a full site re-design, always consider what content will be most useful to your visitors and how it will enhance their overall experience. After all, it's the people we are hoping to build relationships with, not the search engines.
